Our Women of History: 85 Years of Outstanding Leadership
Mrs. Georgiana Harper Sibley: "Transformational Leadership"
Georgiana Sibley (May 30, 1887 - June 10,1980) was a former President of our Church Women United in Rochester and Vicinity, Inc. Unit. During the 1940's she became the National President of Church Women United. Mrs. Sibley's enthusiastic energy led her to everything from promoting improved housing and social services, to fighting for racial toleration and global peace. She travel all over the globe, spoke in the chamber of commerce at the United Nations, lecture to students at the International Christian University of Tokyo in Japan, and voiced concern regarding human Rights issues with Eleanor Roosevelt.
In 1945, Mrs. Sibley was chosen as the "National Mother of the Year" and later that year helped found the United Nations of Rochester. In fact, she was later elected its President while still in her 80's. But is was her Christ-like compassion for the least, the lost, and the lonely, which was the hallmark of her character. Mrs. Harper Sibley took her religious beliefs very seriously and put them into action for the benefit of others, as do women in Church Women United today!
