We participate in the Fellowship of the Least Coin which is a way for women around the world to give to other women in need, to be in communion with our sisters in every country. Those with the least give the same as those with the most. In the United States we give pennies and with each penny we offer a prayer.
By giving the least coin and giving it with a prayer we are reminded of how much can be done with the smallest coin. The symbol we use shows hands crossing the boundaries of poverty, powerlessness, race, religion, color and any other barrier.
This Canadian page gives good info on the Fellowship of the Least Coin.
The coins are collected and sent to a fund managed on an international basis. No tallies are kept of how much is given by a country. It is an act of faith with our sisters.
Grants are given based on need. One village may need a well, another may need a plow, yet another may need a loom. In 2010, over $190,000 was given worldwide.
