This year, World Community Day focuses on justice and peace in the global society.  The chosen theme is AEmbracing Justice Under God=s Tent.@  The logo depicts lady justice embracing the globe, providing a touch of comfort and solace to the earth=s inhabitants.  As women of faith, we are called to look at the issues facing women today and determine where we can be instruments of comfort and solace as well.

The world today has more refugees than ever before.  The causes are war, violence, boundary disputes, economics, technological disasters, and global climate change.  Throughout history, people have been displaced by similar incidents.  This worship service and study will focus on Biblical examples of displacement, homelessness, and refugees B all helping to inform our faith and actions today.

Join us to celebrate World Community Day!

From the President

To God be the Glory, For Great Things He Has Done!

From the on set of the 85th Anniversary planning session, it seemed as if God was saying, ASee I am doing a new thing!  Do you not perceive it?@  This Anniversary celebration was absolutely, and positively first class, from the wonderful hors d=oeuvres served in the living room, to the delicious meal, and dessert served by the Country Club=s staff in the dining room.  Those were the positive comments echoed many, many times.

The entire anniversary celebration was professionally and magnificently executed from the beginning to the end.  Our speakers were absolutely superb in the manner they chose to share their AFaith Journey.@  The unique style of their presentations, commanded everyone=s attention.

Hats off to our surprise guests, who make up our great cloud of witnesses for Church Women United!  We were graced with the presence of Mrs. Harper Sibley, Susan B. Anthony, a nurse from the Visiting Nurses Association, and an original member from Church Women United=s Choir.  As we continued the historical journey, visual aids were used as a living time line, bringing to life organizations which were launched by Church Women United or organizations which we helped to launch.

As you know, the people behind the scenes in part, were the ones to bring the program together. Committee members and office staff, you are very much appreciated! However, I do want to single out Rev. Sue Forsyth, who worked untiringly, and contributed many, many times over and above the call of duty to make this celebration a memorable occasion.

I also want to pass on our appreciation and thanks to all, who contributed the use of their talents, time, monetary gifts, and excellent efficient service, resulting in a most memorable historical day. Again,

To God be the Glory! B President,  Audrey Davidson

                                                              CWU ACTION ALERTS

Alert #1

SIGN THE PETITION TO Help Lift Women Around the World from Poverty

Right now a groundbreaking bill that has the potential to help lift millions of women in the developing world out of poverty is before Congress.  On July 10, 2007 Congresswoman Lowey (D‑NY) and Congresswoman Ros‑Lehtinen (R‑FL), re‑introduced the AGlobal Resources and Opportunities for Women to Thrive Act (GROWTH Act, HR 2965)@ in the U.S. House of Representatives.  The GROWTH Act is an innovative bill that, if passed, would make the U.S. a leader in reducing poverty and promoting opportunities for women and families around the world.

HOW WOULD THE GROWTH ACT HELP WOMEN?

‑‑‑Small business:  Help poor women start and grow their own businesses

‑‑-Property Rights:  Help increase women's land and property rights

‑‑-Wages and Working Conditions:  Help improve women's wages and working conditions by                    emphasizing training and education

-‑‑Access to Global Trade:  Ensure that increased trade benefits women and families living poverty

-‑‑Local Women's Organizations:  Encourage U.S. agencies to recognize women and to work with local        organizations that focus on women's needs.

The innovative provisions of the GROWTH Act remove a range of barriers that prevent women from participating actively in their countries' economies.  If passed, it would make US policy a driver of positive change for women around the globe.

PLEASE ADD YOUR NAME TO THE PETITION ASKING YOUR CONGRESSPERSON to actively support this important legislation by going to www.womensedge.org

Alert #2

TAKE ACTION NOW ON BEHALF OF IRAQI REFUGEES     CALL YOUR SENATORS !

This summer, more than 2,000 letters from members of EPIC (Education for Peace in Iraq Center) were hand delivered to all 100 Senators. The letters urged Senators to cosponsor The Refugee Crisis in Iraq Act, which would help strengthen our nation's response to the humanitarian and protection needs of Iraqi refugees.

Senator Kennedy (D‑MA) has introduced AThe Refugee Crisis in Iraq Act as an amendment (No. 2872)@ to a Defense Authorization bill that is now before the Senate.  The amendment has won bi-partisan support of over 15 Senators.

Call the Capitol Switchboard at 202‑224‑3121 and ask to be connected to your Senator(s). Your senator needs to know of your concern regarding this very important issue.

A sample letter is available.  Please call the CWU office 342-2790 to receive a copy.  Your phone call and/or letter can help generate lifesaving relief for the innocent victims of the Iraq conflict.

Alert #3

                                                        TAXES ON BEER TOO SMALL

Contact your U.S. Senators and Representatives. Please call, write or E‑mail your request not to cut taxes on beer, the largest contributor to highway crashes and underage binge drinking.

Taxes on beer are pitifully small and should be raised to discourage abusive drinking, costing us $62 billion annually. Additionally, pro‑health messages should be mandated to warn the public that drinking alcohol fast can, and does risk AOD (alcohol overdose) death in a matter of hours.
