2009

Advent 2009
This year’s Advent Celebration began with the Annual Meeting and Election of Officers on Friday December 4, 2009 at The Baptist Temple in Brighton. Sixty-five people were in attendance during the various activities of the day including the CWU bake sale and Rochester Roots sale. Many gave to Dollar$ for Diaper$ to be given to Sanctuary House, Catholic Family Center’s emergency shelter for women and children.

The CWU in Rochester Annual Business Meeting was called to order by Audrey Davidson. It consisted of a brief reports and prayer for the election of the new officers. The following is a list of newly elected officers:

  • Day of Reflection Chair/Spiritual Resources - Sally Dodgson (2010)

They Will Call Him Immanuel was this year’s Bible study theme based on Old Testament prophecies (Isaiah 7, 14) of a sign that was fulfilled through the birth of Jesus Christ. Immanuel means God with us.

Our Bible study facilitator was Brenda D. Lee, University of Rochester School of Medicine assistant Dean for Medical Education and Student Affairs and Assistant Professor in the Division of the Medical Humanities. Using as a teaching method, PowerPoint, and group interaction, Brenda led us to a deeper understanding of Immanuel, meaning of faith, and to seeing God with us in the presence of the cross around us. We looked at the phrase God is with usdetermining its impact depending on which word in the phrase we emphasized.

Following our bag lunches, we gathered in the Sanctuary for the CWU in Rochester Installation of Officers and the Advent Program of Scriptures, thematic hymns and carols led by Linda Moore, CWU Choir Director, and the CWU Choir.

Our Advent service ran smoothly thanks to our hostess, Beverly Letter, Terry Nesbitt, and the Advent program committee: Mary Ann Henry, Linda Moore, and Sally Dudgeon.

2008

The 2008 Advent Celebration, with the theme "Come, Lord, Jesus!," was held on Friday, December 5, hosted by Ogden Presbyterian Church in Spencerport. Forty-six women were in attendance, along with the members of the Church Women United Choir.

The CWU Annual Business Meeting was called to order by Audrey Davidson. It consisted of a brief devotional and prayer for the election of the new officers. The following is a list of newly elected officers:

  • Day of Reflection Chair/Spiritual Resources - Rev. Sue Forsyth
  • Advent Chair - Frances Garrett
  • World Community Day Chair, Eloise Mulligan (Re-elected)

  • Nominating Co-Chairs: Sally Dodgson and Eleanor Pope
  • Nominating Committee Members: Marie Barker, Frances Garrett, Gail Mason, and Joan Palmer
The Bible Study, led by Gail Ricciuti, Associate Professor of Homiletics at CRCDS, gave an awesome and inspiring presentation. She wove the selected readings of Scripture for the Advent event: Mark 1:1-8. "The Message," with insights by Eugene Peterson, "turning your old life in for a kingdom life."

The attendees gathered in the sanctuary for worship. Everyone joined in singing "O Come, O Come, Emmanuel," which was led by the CWU Choir. Next, we turned our attention to the Installation of Newly-Elected Officers and the recognition of those who will continue to serve. Each installed person pledged to carry out their duties in the strength and power of God, with the encouragement, support and cooperation of all who were present. The 2008 Advent Celebration was a great success due to the support of everyone and for the diligent work of the committee: Gloria Klink, Sharon Listman, Jean Murphy, chairperson, Joan Palmer and Eleanor Pope, the hospitality of the ladies of Ogden Presbyterian Church and their chairs Pat Everett and Pat Hutchison.

Your generous gifts of canned goods, diapers for Sanctuary House and the event’s monetary total of $462.00 are gratefully acknowledged.

Rise Church, Fairport, NY, attended by approximately 44 participants. The time constraints of a very busy agenda was very challenging but did not deter the Success of the Program.

Åt the Annual CWU Business Meeting, the 2008 budget was accepted and the new CWU Vice President, Lura Masters, as well as the committee chairs were elected and later installed at the Worship Service. New Committee chairs as well as re-elected officers are as follows:

  • President, Audrey Davidson (Re-elected)

  • World Day of Prayer, Mary Discher
  • EIA Education Chair, Odessa Lybrand
  • EIA Action Co-Chairs: Betty Allinger and Eleanor Newell
  • Nominating Committee Members: Sally Dodgson and Eleanor Pope
Sheryl Zabel, Pastoral Associate of Church of Assumption, Fairport, presided at the Bible Study, with emphasis on Advent as a time of great hope; and where would we be without it? Selections for reflections were from the Prophet Isaiah and the Letters of Paul and two groups were formed who then, using the given citations, shared their insights on hope and blessings from their faith.

The Worship Program reinforced the Advent theme with Readings from: Psalm: 71:14-16; Romans: 8:18-25, and Micah 5:1-3. We Thank Linda Moore and the CWU choir members for leading us with their gifted voices in the Hymns and Anthems.

Also, a special "Thank You" to all of you who did the readings and helped in any way to make the event very meaningful, particularly, Betty Allinger in surprising us with her delicious homemade bread; Esther Hammer for all her hard work in welcoming us to Mt. Rise UCC and for her preparations of hospitality. Your efforts, dedication and support are also reflected in the generous total of $424.50.

Thank you One and All! Have a Holy, Happy, Healthy New Year!
