Many times, we have received knitted 7" x 9" blocks for afghans, made by Mrs. Jean Meeker, of Naples, New York.  Following are excerpts from her obituary printed in the Sunday, October 21, 2007, Messenger Post, written by Julie Sherwood:

......AJean Meeker: >She was the epitome of strength.......Mrs. Meeker died Oct. 4.  She was 84. .....Mrs. Meeker=s son, Robert, said his mother always kept busy knitting sweaters and blankets to give family members and donate to those in need. ....Rev. Karl Warrington said >She was a great sounding board.  She=d always give a tidbit of wisdom.@  Mrs. Meeker served as choir director at what is now Trinity Federated Church in Naples, NY.

NCADD-RA Raises Awareness About Underage Gambling

A Rochester study of youth in grades 6-12, conducted by the National Council on Alcoholism & Drug Dependence-Rochester Area (NCADD-RA) in 2006, showed that 53% of those surveyed gambled in the previous year.  Other studies show the prevalence of gambling on college campuses is also high, about 75%.

Problem gambling is often referred to as the >hidden addiction= because there are no outward, physical signs of a problem.  Some of the risks associated with problem gambling include financial difficulties, attempted suicide, substance abuse, depression and anxiety.

As a part of this public awareness effort, representatives from De Paul=s NCADD-RA will conduct outreach in schools and youth organizations throughout Rochester.

For more information or to schedule someone to speak about the risks of underage gambling call National Council on Alcoholism & Drug Dependence-Rochester Area, at (585) 426-8000 or visit www.nydas.org.

WHEN:      Wednesday, January 2, 7 PM

WHERE:    Downtown Presbyterian Church; 121 N. Fitzhugh St. (wheelchair‑accessible, looped for people with hearing loss)

WHY:        (from the SOA website): The School of the Americas (SOA), in 2001 renamed the "Western Hemisphere Institute for Security Cooperation," is a combat training school for Latin American soldiers, located at Fort Benning, Georgia.

Over its 59 years, the SOA has trained over 60,000 Latin American soldiers in counterinsurgency techniques, sniper training, commando and psychological warfare, military intelligence and interrogation tactics.  These graduates have consistently used their skills to wage a  war against their own people. Among those targeted by SOA graduates are educators, union organizers, religious workers, student leaders,  and others who work for the rights of the poor.  Hundreds of thousands of Latin Americans have been tortured, raped, assassinated, "disappeared," massacred, and forced into refugee by those trained at the School of Assassins.

From The President

This year the Annual Tea, hosted by Rev. Sue Forsyth, was held earlier than usual in

hopes of avoiding other celebrations during this busy season.  As always, Sue was a gracious hostess to CWU.  The fellowship was wonderful, as well as all the cookies, fruit cake, and teas. As we fellow-shipped and sang carols, it was evident that the spirit of the Christmas season was being ushered in.  Thank you, Sue.

In the spirit of celebrating and sharing gifts we receive, let us remember that every gift of the season should come wrapped in the love of Jesus, the gift no one else could give. It is my prayer that the miracles and blessings of the season will fill your hearts with loving kindness and happiness throughout the coming year.

                                                          Audrey Davidson, President
