As part of our desire to work for a world of peace and justice, we began a three part EIA (Education, Insight, Action) Initiative to educate ourselves and take action on a particular social issue. This year we are focusing on the family. We also have several ongoing projects Task Force on Courts, CWU Choir, Community Food Cupboard, Housing Advocacy Council for which volunteers are always welcome.
GRCC Overcoming ViolenceWe are a member of GRCC who has a wonderful new project to overcome violence in our city. Background: The Faith Community Alliance, the Baptist Ministers Alliance and the Greater Rochester Community of Churches believe that the root causes of violence must be addressed through stronger communities. We invite the community to participate in our forums on violence across the city. These forums are a follow-up to the Summit on Violence that was held at Mt. Olivet Baptist Church on November 15. While this initiative is based in Christian Churches, we invite the participation of all faith communities, as well as the entire community. The members of the community affected by violence will tell their stories and shape community standards for responding to violence. These standards will ask the community to play its essential role in reducing violence, along with the police, other community groups, and leaders. Our previous forums have brought our community together on these issues, and we hope the tremendous energy and commitment generated by those gatherings will carry us forward. Join us in collecting books for Rochester Education Foundation and their Give Back Give Books drive.
Women's Health Kits We have restarted a project to distribute person care items to women leaving incarceration. Completed kits or donated items can be dropped off at the CUW office, Mondays - Thursdays from 9:30 am - Noon.
Fellowship of the Least Coin We participate in the Fellowship of the Least Coin which is a way for women around the world to give to other women in need, to be in communion with our sisters in every country. Those with the least give the same as those with the most. In the United States we give pennies and with each penny we offer a prayer.By giving the least coin and giving it with a prayer we are reminded of how much can be done with the smallest coin. The symbol we use shows hands crossing the boundaries of poverty, powerlessness, race, religion, color and any other barrier. Church World ServiceKits can be dropped off at Downtown United Presbyterian Church, 121 N Fitzhugh St, Rochester.Contact: Jim Moe at (585)325-4000 or Church World Service at (315) 458-8535.
